Breast Cancer Sucks..

TBreast-Cancer-470x260hat word CANCER, brings dread to each and every one of us.. We all fear that we might be struck down with a disease that could take us from this earth far too early.. A disease that is slowly being fought by drugs and medical science but a disease that can ultimately take our lives.

We have all heard of preventative measures.. mammogram screening, self checking your breasts for lumps.. but for some women, there is a high risk that they carry the gene that causes breast cancer.  Even though they are at the present moment in time cancer free… there is a high risk that in future years that they may develop this disease.

What are their options?

For Sharon Osbourne, who fought colon cancer, and Angelina Jolie, two Hollywood Stars who do carry this gene, the only option they felt that was open to them was double mastectomy.

Back in November 2012, Sharon Osbourne in an article in the Guardian said:

“For me, it wasn’t a big decision, it was a no-brainer. I didn’t want to live the rest of my life with that shadow hanging over me. I want to be around for a long time and be a grandmother to Pearl. I didn’t even think of my breasts in a nostalgic way, I just wanted to be able to live my life without that fear all the time. It’s not ‘pity me’, it’s a decision I made that’s got rid of this weight that I was carrying around.”

When news hit the headlines that Angelina Jolie has also had a double mastectomy, it came as quite a shock.. Normally a Hollywood Star can’t breath without the press running a story on it.. but for Angelina Jolie she underwent 3 operations and has only just revealed the truth of why she underwent this procedure.

In a New York Times article Angelina Jolie writes:

On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved. During that time I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work.

But I am writing about it now because I hope that other women can benefit from my experience. Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. But today it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.

She then goes on to say:

I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.

Breast cancer doesn’t pick and choose who it will strike.. Because you are famous doesn’t mean you are exempt from this disease.. Because you have wealth on your side it doesn’t mean that your health will be untouched.  Many celebrities have had to deal with breast cancer, including Kylie Minogue, Jaclyn Smith, Sheryl Crow and Olivia Newton John, to name but a few.

Angelina Jolie states that she decided to go public about her preventative measures against breast cancer, so that people out there can know there is a choice for them.. there is preventative measures they can take..   A simple blood test can reveal if your chances of breast cancer are high or not and whether you carry this mutated gene.

Angelina Jolie could have kept this a secret.. nobody found out whilst she was having treatment… but I am glad she has broken her silence because a) her article lets people know there are preventative measures should you have this mutated gene and b) that anybody could develop breast cancer in life.. even celebrities.

And remember it is not only women who suffer from breast cancer.. men can too.
