But I am all for an airport in Kent… and I really can’t see what all the fuss is about.
Well according to the Airport Watch Organisation, they state:
Airports Commission publishes interim report with 2 options for a runway at Heathrow and 1 at Gatwick. Estuary still being considered
Date added: December 17, 2013
The Airports Commission’s interim report has put forward 3 options for a new runway, and have kept their options open on an estuary airport. There would only be one runway, not two and they consider this should be in operation before 2030. At Heathrow the choices are a north west runway, 3,500 metres long, destroying Harmondsworth; and an extension westwards of at least 3,000 metres, of the existing northern runway. They also consider a wide spaced Gatwick runway to the south. The Commission also says “there is likely to be a demand case for a 2nd additional runway to be operational by 2050.” They claim this is “consistent with the Committee of Climate Change’s advice to government on meeting its legislated climate change targets.” Stansted is ruled out, and on the Thames Estuary they say: “The Commission has not shortlisted any of the Thames Estuary options because there are too many uncertainties and challenges surrounding them at this stage. It will undertake further study of the Isle of Grain option in the first half of 2014 and will reach a view later next year on whether that option offers a credible proposal for consideration alongside the other short-listed options.” The report also contains recommendations to the government for immediate action to improve the use of existing runway capacity. Among others, these include better airspace organisation and surface transport improvements such as enhancement of Gatwick station, a rail link from the south to Heathrow, and a rail link between Heathrow and Stansted.
Have these anti-airport campaigners really thought of the benefits that this airport would bring?
Apart from the jobs it will create building the airport, there will also be jobs created within the airport once it is open… Check-in staff, baggage handlers, security.. not to mention the people employed in the duty-free shops and other retail outlets that are found within an airport environment.
But it doesn’t just stop there does it.. there will have to be a hotel built.. again once built jobs will be created .. and then there is business a new airport will generate for Kent… Bluewater will be just a few minutes train ride.. should the airport be connected by a decent rail link that links directly to Ebbsfleet.International Station.
Taxi drivers within the Medway Towns will see their revenue boost as people use local taxis to and fro the airport.
People say, that the price of our homes will be affected.. believe me.. it won’t. Are the houses in and around Heathrow and Gatwick hard to sell and going for a song?.. No they are not.. Prices might stagnate during the building process but once the airport is up and running the price of your home will soar, simply because people working at the airport will want to live locally.
And to be perfectly honest, I think I would prefer an airport at Cliffe rather than Boris Island.. because if Boris Island is a winner in the future.. it will mean more income generated for London yet again…
I know not everyone is going to agree with me on this.. and yes I do feel sorry for those people who might be forced to move.. but let us be realistic here.. do these people travel abroad on holidays? Do they fly on business trips? Because if they do use airports, like Heathrow and Gatwick, don’t you find there is an element of double standards here.. and some people don’t want an airport on their doorstep but they don’t mind it being on someone else’s.
I am afraid to say if we want holidays, and we want to get on planes.. they have to take off and land somewhere.. and since we can’t have “Beam me Up Scotty” transportation then the quickest and easiest way of getting from A to B is by flying.
Providing a decent compensation scheme is offered to those that will be affected then people really should see the advantages of what an airport at Cliffe could bring to the Medway Towns..
And I can’t agree with one word that Cllr VInce Maple says:

Sorry I don’t think it is bad for Medway and I don’t think it is bad for the environment…and this Councillor is not speaking for me nor my husband who also would welcome an airport at Grain and within easy access of the Medway Towns.
Sorry let’s stop moaning and let’s get building… The sooner an airport is up and running the more prosperous the Medway Towns will be.
